Di Linh
Di Linh
Between Dalat and Saigon, Di Linh combines tea and coffee plantations from the Lam Dong Plateau with waterfalls in the southern highlands.
A discreet stop on the route between Dalat and Saigon, Di Linh is an agricultural district in Lam Dong Province, perched at approximately 1,000 meters altitude on the plateau of the same name. Known for its tea and coffee plantations, the area also serves as a gateway to several waterfalls in the southern highlands.
Why stop in Di Linh
Di Linh does not feature in Vietnam's classic itineraries, but offers an interesting rural character for those traveling to Dalat from the coast or from Saigon. The plateau, favorable for agriculture, combines three main crops: tea, coffee (robusta especially) and mulberry destined for sericulture. This agricultural mosaic and the presence of several waterfalls within easy reach make it a coherent stop to slow the pace between two stages.
What to see in and around Di Linh
Plateau plantations
The landscape is dominated by vast tea and coffee plantations stretching across the gentle slopes of the plateau. Locally, mulberry cultivation feeds a historic sericulture activity (silk worm farming) in the region. A simple bike ride through the surroundings allows you to observe these crops and the work of local farmers.
Bo Bla Waterfall
Located near the town of Di Linh, the Bo Bla waterfall is a curtain of water about thirty meters high framed by tropical vegetation. Access is via a short trail from the national highway.
Pongour Falls
West of Dalat, the Pongour falls form a wide rocky staircase in a semi-circular shape, particularly impressive during the rainy season when water flow is at its peak. It is one of the most photogenic waterfalls in the region.
Gougah Falls
The more modest Gougah falls are located roadside between Di Linh and Duc Trong. A brief stop is enough to view them.
Lien Khuong Falls
The Lien Khuong falls span about a hundred meters wide. They are now partially developed for visitors.
When to visit
The highlands climate is temperate year-round, with cooler temperatures than in the lowlands. Two seasons shape the region:
- Dry season (November to April): clear skies and ideal conditions for riding and photographing the plantations.
- Rainy season (May to October): showers are frequent but often brief, and this is when the waterfalls display their strongest flow.
To combine green landscapes and powerful waterfalls without being too bothered by rain, the months of May-June and September-October offer a good compromise.
How to get there
Di Linh lies on National Highway 20, between Bao Loc to the west and Dalat to the east, approximately 80 km from the latter. Several options:
- From Dalat: 1.5 to 2 hours by private car or public bus heading toward Saigon.
- From Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City): expect 5 to 6 hours by night or day bus.
- By air: the nearest airport is Lien Khuong, halfway between Di Linh and Dalat.
On site, motorcycle taxis or scooter rentals allow you to reach the waterfalls scattered throughout the area.
Practical information
- Recommended duration: a half-day to a full day is enough to combine a waterfall and a plantation.
- Accommodation: options are limited to a few local guesthouses; most travelers stay in Dalat or Bao Loc.
- Visitor levels: very low, particularly outside Vietnamese weekends.
- What to bring: a light jacket for cool evenings on the plateau.
Nearby
Di Linh fits naturally into an itinerary connecting the coast to the highlands. To the east, Dalat and its cool mountain climate; to the west, Bao Loc and its own waterfalls; further south, the Mekong Delta plain. To extend your exploration of Vietnam's natural landscapes, Bach Ma National Park on the central coast, or the mangrove forest of Can Gio near Saigon, offer interesting contrasts. Coastal lovers can also reach Ca Na on the return route to the coast.
