Between Hué and Da Nang, Lang Co Beach stretches 10 km of sand between Lap An Lagoon, Hai Van Pass and Bach Ma National Park.

Midway between Hué and Da Nang, along Vietnam's central coast, Lang Co Beach unfolds a 10 km stretch of sand backed by Bach Ma National Park. The site combines an interior lagoon (Lap An), an underdeveloped coastal strip, and immediate proximity to Hai Van Pass, one of the country's most renowned mountain passages. Once a humble fishing village turned beach destination, Lang Co remains quieter than the resorts of Da Nang or Nha Trang, making it a logical stop between visiting Hué and exploring central Vietnam.

Why stop at Lang Co

Lang Co's appeal stems from its geography: a strip of land wedged between the South China Sea and Lap An Lagoon, closed to the south by Hai Van Pass and backed to the west by the forested foothills of Bach Ma. This configuration offers, within a 20 km radius, a long and quiet beach, a brackish body of water where oyster farming still thrives, freshwater springs in the forest, and a highland national park. For a traveler in transit between Hué and Da Nang, the stop breaks up a full day's drive and varies the scenery without detour.

A bit of history

Lang Co, originally a simple fishing village called Làng Cò under the Nguyễn Dynasty (1802-1945), took its name from the storks (cò in Vietnamese) that roosted in the wetlands. The hamlet served as a transit point for travelers heading toward Hai Van Pass, the mandatory route between the former imperial capital and the country's south. During the colonial period, the French renamed it Lang Cô and began frequenting its beaches.

The opening of the Hai Van Tunnel in 2005, which bypasses the pass through the mountain's base, shifted the village's dynamics: through traffic plummeted, which paradoxically preserved the bay's still-rural character while easing access from Da Nang.

What to see and do

The beach

The main beach stretches roughly ten kilometers, bordered inland by the reliefs of Bach Ma National Park. The sand is pale, the water usually calm during the dry season. Visitor numbers remain moderate outside summer weekends. A few beachfront restaurants serve products from the lagoon, notably oysters and shrimp.

Lap An Lagoon

Located inland, Lap An is a shallow lagoon where shellfish farming is practiced. At low tide, exposed banks allow wading through the water and approaching oyster beds. The site is particularly photogenic in late afternoon, when Bach Ma's mountains reflect on the surface.

Elephant Springs (Suoi Voi)

About twenty kilometers to the north, on the edge of Bach Ma Park, these natural springs form freshwater pools in the forest. The site owes its name to an elephant-shaped rock that overlooks one of the pools. It's a popular stop for bathing in cool water after the beach.

Hai Van Pass

Reaching 496 m, the pass offers sweeping panoramas over Lang Co Bay to the north and Da Nang to the south. At the summit stand remnants of Nguyễn-era fortifications and bunkers from the Indochina and Vietnam wars. The road is heavily frequented by motorcyclists.

Son Tra Island

Accessible by boat from the beach, this small island allows for a half-day excursion swimming and discovering less-visited coves.

When to go

The dry season spans April through September, with average temperatures around 25°C and sunny days ideal for swimming. October through February marks the northeast monsoon: frequent rains, often rough seas, very reduced visitor numbers. To combine Lang Co with Hué and Hoi An in the same trip, the most stable window falls between May and early August.

How to get there

  • From Hué: approximately 70 km south via national highway. Allow 1.5 hours by taxi or private car. Phu Bai Airport (Hué) is about 1 hour by taxi.
  • From Da Nang: approximately 35 km north. Da Nang International Airport is accessible by taxi, either via Hai Van Pass (scenic but longer route) or through the tunnel (faster).
  • By train: the north-south railway serves the small Lang Co station. Multiple daily trains connect Hué and Da Nang along the coast, on one of the country's most scenic rail stretches.
  • By bus: long-distance coaches traveling the North-South route stop nearby; affordable fares, variable duration depending on the route.

Practical information

  • Recommended visit duration: half a day for the beach alone, a full day if adding Lap An and Hai Van Pass, two nights to include Bach Ma or Elephant Springs.
  • Accommodation: from family guesthouses to beachfront resorts, supply is concentrated along the coast and around the lagoon.
  • To bring: sunscreen, closed shoes if walking in the lagoon or forest, insect repellent for late afternoons.
  • Money: few ATMs on-site, bring cash from Hué or Da Nang.

Nearby

Lang Co fits naturally into a dense central Vietnam itinerary. To the south, past Hai Van Pass, Da Nang houses the Cham Sculpture Museum, essential for understanding the Champa Kingdom's history in the region. Further north, the terrestrial Halong Bay and karst landscapes of Cát Bà extend coastal discovery across Vietnam. For contrast with the country's south, the Cai Rang Floating Market in the Mekong Delta and Buu Long Mountain near Ho Chi Minh City round out the picture.
