Between Hué and Da Nang, Suoi Voi ("the Elephant Spring") lines natural pools and waterfalls through forest, a refreshing stop in central Vietnam.

Located between Hué and Da Nang, in Thua Thien-Hué Province, Suoi Voi — "the Elephant Spring" — is a natural bathing area fed by mountain streams. Open to tourism since 1994, the site is prized for its stone pools, waterfalls and the crisp waters, midway between the two major cities of central Vietnam.

Why Visit Suoi Voi

Suoi Voi offers a refreshing break in an itinerary between Hué and Da Nang, two cities where the tropical climate can weigh heavy. The waterway stretches for roughly 9 km, with a wide bed and gentle slope, creating a succession of shallow pools suited to family bathing. The site's appeal lies as much in its forest setting as in its proximity to other regional attractions, such as Lang Co beach and Hai Van Pass.

The site remains relatively untouched by mass international tourism: it is primarily a weekend destination for Vietnamese families, making it an interesting vantage point for observing local outdoor life.

History and Etymology

The name Suoi Voi literally means "the Elephant Spring." The place was formerly known as Suoi Me, meaning "great elephant." The region was once frequented by wild elephants, whose repeated passage allegedly contributed, according to local tradition, to forming the natural pools that now dot the waterway.

At the site's entrance, a rock whose silhouette evokes that of an elephant recalls this nomenclature. The site has been open to the public as a tourist destination since 1994, with the development of huts, picnic areas and small restaurants run by locals.

What There Is to See and Do

The Pools and Elephant Pool

The site comprises a succession of natural basins carved into the rock by erosion. The most well-known, Elephant Pool, sits nestled between two small waterfalls and reaches approximately 3 metres in depth. The water is clear and cool year-round. Other, shallower pools suit children and occasional swimmers.

Forest and Trails

Around the pools, several trails allow for walking through humid forest. Allow 1 to 2 hours for a leisurely exploration of the surroundings. Locals still practice fishing for small fish and collecting river snails in certain sections of the waterway.

Local Cuisine On-Site

Small stands and restaurants serve local specialities: grilled fish, river snails, frog sautéed with lemongrass and chilli. Dishes are prepared to order, often using products from the stream itself.

Practical Information

Access to Suoi Voi is ticketed and remains at a modest rate for visitors. Supplements exist for parking (motorbike and car) and rental of wooden huts, useful for storing belongings and resting between swims. As prices may change, it's best to bring some Vietnamese dong cash, as card payments are not guaranteed.

Bring closed-toe shoes or river sandals (rocks can be slippery), a swimsuit, a towel and insect repellent.

When to Go

The best time to visit Suoi Voi runs from March to August. This is the dry season in central Vietnam: water is clear, flow is moderate and bathing is pleasant. Conversely, from September to December, the region receives heavy rainfall and the site may close due to risk of sudden flooding. Also avoid Vietnamese weekends and public holidays if you seek tranquillity, as local families come to picnic in numbers.

How to Get There

Suoi Voi is located roughly 60 km south of Hué and 40 km north of Da Nang. Access is via National Road QL1A (Highway 1), with an exit marked around kilometre 52, followed by a small road leading to the site. Signage is discreet; it's best to follow a GPS.

  • By car or private taxi: roughly 1 hour from Hué or Da Nang. The simplest option for a day trip.
  • By motorbike: popular option for independent travellers, with the possibility of combining Suoi Voi, Hai Van Pass and Lang Co.
  • By train: Hué – Lang Co line (roughly 1 hour 30 minutes), then taxi or xe ôm to the site entrance.
  • By bus: buses connecting Hué to Da Nang can drop travellers nearby; check with the driver for the nearest stop.
