History

Over the centuries, Đà Nẵng has been shaped by successive waves of occupation. Under the reign of Napoleon III, it became a French colony, later transformed into an American air base during the Vietnam War. Its gradual development led to its establishment as a full municipality in 1997.

Monuments and Museums Worth Exploring

The Cham Museum

The Cham Museum in Danang was built in 1915 by the French School of the Far East, featuring Cham-inspired architectural design. It houses the world's most extensive collection of Cham art, comprising 300 sculptures, several carved from terracotta. Among its masterpieces are four bas-reliefs encircling the base of the 7th-century altar from Tra Kieu, depicting scenes from the Ramayana epic in Amaravati style from South India. All pieces, dating from the 7th to 15th centuries and bearing witness to a matriarchal society, originate from sites of the former Champa kingdom in Central Vietnam: Dong Duong (Indrapura), Khuong My, My Son, Tra Kieu (Simhapura), Thap Mam (Binh Dinh), and other locations in Quang Nam province and Danang. They are displayed across ten rooms corresponding to these ten archaeological sites. Additional exhibitions are also held outside the museum. Cham Museum pieces have traveled worldwide, gracing the greatest galleries globally.

Caodaist Temple

This is the largest Caodaist temple outside Tay Ninh, welcoming approximately 20,000 faithful worshippers from the city. Priests and priestesses enter through the central door, while men use the right entrance and women the left—this same division is mirrored inside. Behind the altar stands the divine eye, the emblem of Caodaism, while opposite it shines the golden inscription "Van Giao Nhat Ly," meaning "All religions share the same truth," suspended from the ceiling. The founders of five world religions appear in the background: Muhammad, Lao Tzu, Jesus, Buddha, and Confucius.

Danang Cathedral

Danang Cathedral was erected in 1923 for the French in medieval architectural style. The parish numbers several thousand worshippers.

Phap Lam Pagoda

Phap Lam Pagoda was built in 1936. At its entrance stands a statue of Dia Tang, the King of Hell.

Tam Bao Pagoda

Tam Bao Pagoda was constructed in 1953 and features a five-story tower.

Lady Buddha

This towering 67-meter statue represents Đà Nẵng's signature attraction. It also houses the Linh Ung Pagoda and various smaller Buddha statues. From its summit, one enjoys breathtaking views over the bay.

Ho Chi Minh Museum

The Ho Chi Minh Museum, Bao Tang Ho Chi Minh, features three sections. The first recounts military history, the second contains a replica of Ho Chi Minh's residence in Hanoi, and the third is dedicated to this national hero.

Mountains Worth Visiting in Danang

Marble Mountains

Located 9 km from Đà Nẵng, they are renowned for their hills formed from a blend of marble and limestone. With tunnels, caves, pagodas, and temples, the site is clearly a place of pilgrimage. While only one mountain is open to the public, its interior reveals an enchanting setting. Entry is paid.

Son Tra Peninsula

This nature reserve harbors a substantial monkey colony, hence its nickname "Monkey Mountain." It's the only place where you're likely to encounter them. The summit, ideal for camping, showcases another facet of the landscape. After the climb, admire an immense thousand-year-old Banyan tree, in splendid company with the primates.

Non Nuoc

Just minutes from the Marble Mountains, it ranks among the country's most stunning beaches and counts among the world's finest coastlines. Its vast stretch of soft white sand invites leisurely sunbathing. My Khe

This shore was a rest stop for Americans during the Vietnam War. It's also renowned as one of Vietnam's most luxurious beaches. This is why both local and foreign visitors flock to this strategic destination. There's nothing quite like relaxing here with a cold beer in hand.

Pham Van Dong

Xuan Thieu or Red Beach

Cho Han

The Cho Han market takes its name from the Han River and is the city's most touristy market. It's celebrated for its abundance of products sold at bargain prices.

This venue houses 2,000 traders and represents the region's largest wholesale and retail hub.

Bac My An

Climate

Đà Nẵng enjoys tropical weather with mild temperatures year-round. February is the driest month. October marks the most stormy period, averaging 525.9 mm of rainfall.

From Hanoi, travel can be accomplished by bus or train. However, flights remain the fastest option given the considerable distance.

Taxis are highly practical and comfortable, charging by the kilometer with rates varying seasonally. GRAB and UBER applications are also available.

Other options include renting a motorcycle, scooter, or hiring a car with driver.
