Around Danang
Around Danang
From the Marble Mountains to Tien Sa military cemetery, passing through surf beaches and marble workshops, explore the surroundings of Danang.
Marble Mountains
The Marble Mountains are a cluster of five peaks named Kim Son, Moc Son, Thuy Son, Hoa Son, and Tho Son, each representing one of the five elements that compose the universe in Vietnamese philosophy: metal, wood, water, fire, and earth. Several Buddhist sanctuaries are built within the natural caves of Thuy Son, which once hosted Hindu places of worship during the Cham period. At the entrance stands the Ong Chon gate, and just beyond it, the Linh Ong pagoda. Further along, a path leads to the Tang Chon Dong caves, where you can see stone blocks sculpted by the Cham. The rest of the path passes successively through a panoramic terrace overlooking the South China Sea, the Van Thong cave in the middle of a canyon, the grand Linh Nham cave, the immense Huyen Khong grotto, and the Tam Thai Tu pagoda.
Non Nuoc Village
Within the Non Nuoc village, at the foot of Thuy Son mountain, the tradition of stone carving has been passed down through generations. The village is home to no fewer than 600 families who engage occasionally or regularly in engraving and sculpting works of art, marble statues, and other stone creations.
Thanh Binh Beach
Just 2 km from Danang stretches the hugely popular Thanh Binh beach.
Nam O Beach
Located about fifteen kilometers from the city, Nam O beach draws its heritage from a population that once thrived on the firecracker trade but has since shifted to the production of fish sauce, better known as nuoc mam.
This vast beach stretches for kilometers on either side of the Marble Mountains and has seen visitor numbers surge with the arrival of both Vietnamese and foreign tourists, along with upscale hotel complexes. China Beach actually comprises two distinct beaches: My Khe beach and the lagoon of the Non Nuoc resort. From May to July, the sea is generally calm.
China Beach also attracts the surfing community, as it hosts Vietnam's international surfing competitions along these shores. From mid-September to December, China Beach delivers some of the region's finest waves.
Just a few hundred meters from Tien Sa port (Cang Tien Sa), perched on a small hill, stands a small white chapel belonging to the French and Spanish military cemetery. It contains the graves of soldiers who died primarily from cholera, scurvy, typhus, and dysentery during the year following the capture of Danang in August 1858.
