The highest peak in southern Vietnam in Tay Ninh, Ba Den Mountain combines Buddhist pilgrimage, Vietnamese and Cambodian legends, and panoramic views from the summit.

Ba Den Mountain dominates Tay Ninh province in eastern Nam Bo, approximately one hundred kilometers northwest of Ho Chi Minh City. Rising to around 986 meters, it constitutes the highest point in southern Vietnam. A major Buddhist pilgrimage site and natural landmark recognizable by its distinctive conical silhouette rising from the plains, it attracts Vietnamese and Cambodian pilgrims, hikers, and international visitors.

Why visit Ba Den Mountain

Ba Den literally means "Lady Den," named after a revered female figure associated with an ancient legend. The site combines several interests rarely found together on a single mountain: a series of pagodas cascading down its flanks, a panoramic summit offering sweeping views across the Mekong plains and the Cambodian border on clear days, a monumental Buddha statue inaugurated in 2020 (Tây Bổ Đà Sơn), and a particularly vibrant pilgrimage atmosphere on full moon days.

Tay Ninh province adds further appeal to a visit: it is also home to the Holy See of Caodaism, a unique syncretic Vietnamese religion found nowhere else in the world, allowing for two complementary visits within a day or two.

History and legends of the mountain

Two narratives are passed down on either side of the mountain, reflecting the two communities that venerate it.

On the eastern slope, locals tell the story of Ly Thi Thiên Huong, a young woman from Binh Dinh province in central Vietnam, who accompanied her father to Tay Ninh. Promised against her will to a forced marriage, she chose death to preserve her virtue, faithful to the fiancé who had rescued her during an accident at the mountain's base. She later appeared in a monk's dream to announce her death and reveal the destinies of several people. A temple was erected in her memory.

On the western slope, locals tell another version: the woman was named Denh, of Cambodian origin, a devout Buddhist who was also forced into an unwanted marriage. She chose death out of loyalty to her religious commitment. Regardless of which version prevails, the veneration of this female figure transcends borders and brings together Vietnamese, Cambodian, and foreign pilgrims.

What to see

The pagoda complex

Several pagodas dedicated to spirits and saints are scattered across the mountain. The most renowned, Linh Son Tien Thach, houses an altar dedicated to Ba Den and concentrates the essence of popular devotion. Other sanctuaries, more discreet, punctuate the paths between the base and summit.

The summit and the Buddha statue

The highest point has been crowned since 2020 with the statue of Tây Bổ Đà Sơn, a monumental bronze representation of Buddha, among the tallest on any mountain summit in Asia. On clear days, the platform offers an expansive panorama across the plains, Dau Tieng Lake, and, in the distance, Cambodian territory.

The pilgrimage experience

On full moon days, the pagodas come alive: incense, offerings, liturgical chants. Even outside pilgrimage periods, the atmosphere remains that of an active sacred site, to be respected in dress and behavior.

Practical information

  • Duration of visit: allow half a day to a full day depending on your chosen ascent method.
  • Hiking to the summit: approximately one hour to reach the top via the trails, with a significant elevation gain. Closed-toe shoes recommended.
  • Cable car: the Sun World Ba Den Mountain complex operates a modern cable car connecting the base to the summit in minutes. Moderate fare, one-way or round-trip tickets available.
  • Dress code: shoulders and knees covered to enter the pagodas.
  • Hydration: bring water, especially during the dry season.

When to visit

Tay Ninh's climate follows the tropical regime of southern Vietnam, with a dry season from November to April (more comfortable for hiking and views) and a rainy season from May to October (frequent afternoon showers).

To experience the intensity of pilgrimage, plan your visit around the 15th day of each lunar month, particularly active. The spring festival, which extends several weeks after Tet (January-February), attracts the largest crowds: both spectacular and very busy.

How to get there

Ba Den Mountain is located approximately 100 km northwest of Ho Chi Minh City. Several options are available:

  • Private car with driver: 2.5 to 3 hours of travel depending on traffic. The most comfortable solution for combining Ba Den Mountain and the Caodaist Holy See in a single day.
  • Public bus: regular departures from Mien Tay or An Suong bus station toward Tay Ninh, then local taxi to the mountain's base.
  • Organized tour: many agencies offer a combined Tay Ninh–Ba Den day trip departing from Ho Chi Minh City.

Other attractions in the province

Tay Ninh offers several complementary sites:

  • The Holy See of Caodaism: the spiritual center of a Vietnamese religion founded in the early 20th century, blending Buddhism, Taoism, and Christianity. The complex includes a school, daycare, park, and swimming pool. Daily ceremonies open to visitors.
  • Dau Tieng Lake: one of Vietnam's largest artificial reservoirs, ideal for a peaceful stop.
  • Lo Go – Xa Mat National Park: a protected forest area near the Cambodian border, of interest for birdwatching.
  • The duty-free market: located near the border crossing with Cambodia, accessible to visitors even without purchase intent.

To further explore the sacred peaks of southern Vietnam, you may also consider the Buu Long Mountain, more modest but renowned for its pagodas.
