Bai Chay Beach Resort
Bai Chay Beach Resort
The main beach resort overlooking Ha Long Bay, Bai Chay serves as a base for cruises among the karst peaks. Beach, waterfront and hotels with views.
The beach resort of Bai Chay stretches along the western shore of Ha Long Bay, in Quang Ninh province, northeast Vietnam. Connected to the port city of Hon Gai by the Bai Chay Bridge, it is the main departure point for cruises in the bay, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Hotels, restaurants and a developed waterfront make it a natural stopover for those who want to combine seaside relaxation with a junk cruise among karst peaks.
Why visit Bai Chay
Bai Chay is above all a gateway to Ha Long Bay. Located about 165 km east of Hanoi, the resort concentrates most of the zone's tourist accommodation, from large international hotels to small family villas. It offers the advantage of being able to board a cruise in the morning without complicated logistics, then return in the evening to a developed urban environment.
The atmosphere remains that of an Asian seaside resort: evening strolls, terraces overlooking the bay, a lively night market in high season. Travelers find hotels and small villas on the hillside facing Ha Long Bay, shaded by pine trees, which allows them to enjoy rooms with views at often more accessible rates than near the embarkation point itself.
What to see and do
The waterfront and beach
Bai Chay's artificial beach stretches nearly 900 meters along Ha Long Boulevard. It has been renovated with imported sand to offer a true swimming area, complemented by a waterfront lined with small restaurants and tourist shops. Swimming remains calm as the bay protects from rough waves, but the water is busier than clear during peak season.
Sun World Ha Long and the Queen Cable Car
The Sun World complex, accessible from Bai Chay, groups together an amusement park, a water park and the Queen cable car that links the resort to Ba Deo hill. The cabins, among the largest in Asia, offer a panoramic view of the bay and the Bai Chay Bridge. At the summit, a Ferris wheel and Japanese garden complete the visit.
The night market and pedestrian street
In the evening, the area around Hoang Gia Park comes alive with stalls selling seafood, souvenirs and local specialties. It's the easiest place to try cha muc (squid fritter), a specialty of Quang Ninh, or grilled oysters with cheese that are very popular locally.
Cruises in Ha Long Bay
The Tuan Chau tourist embarkation point, a few kilometers away, is the main departure point for half-day, full-day or overnight cruises. Itineraries cover Sung Sot and Thien Cung caves, the floating village of Cua Van and Bai Tu Long Bay for longer outings.
When to visit
The best period runs from October to April, with dry weather and pleasant temperatures. October-November and March-April offer the best compromise between visibility, temperature and crowds. Summer (June to August) is hot and humid, conducive to swimming but marked by typhoons that can suspend cruises for several days. January and February sometimes bring persistent mist that reduces visibility of the karst peaks.
Practical information
- Allow 1 to 2 days on site to combine Bai Chay and a cruise in the bay.
- Wide range of accommodation: from budget guesthouses to international resorts, with a clear price advantage outside July-August.
- Keep small Vietnamese bills for the market and waterfront shops.
- Sunscreen, hat and insect repellent useful year-round.
How to get there
From Hanoi, the CT04 expressway gets you to Bai Chay in about 2.5 hours of driving. Direct buses depart daily from My Dinh bus station to Bai Chay (Bai Chay terminal). Private shuttles and long-distance taxis also provide the connection, often more comfortable for a group. From Van Don International Airport, allow about 50 minutes of driving.
Nearby
Tuan Chau Island, connected by a causeway, is home to the main embarkation point and several leisure complexes. The city of Hon Gai, on the other side of the Bai Chay Bridge, offers a more authentic character with its central market and Bai Tho Mountain. To extend your Vietnam trip, nature stopovers such as Ca Na on the southern coast, or the Cai Rang floating market in the Mekong Delta, complement an itinerary between the northern bay and southern provinces. Lovers of spiritual landscapes will also appreciate Ba Den Mountain or Buu Long Mountain.
