Mui Ne beaches, red sand dunes, kitesurfing and Cham towers: everything you need to know to plan your stay in Phan Thiet, on Vietnam's southern coast.

Phan Thiet, the capital of Binh Thuan Province, nestles on the southeastern coast of Vietnam, just 4 hours' drive from Ho Chi Minh City. Once, this city's economy revolved around fishing and fish sauce production. Today, it thrives on tourism. The sector's explosive growth stems from the beauty of its beaches, which draw both residents from Ho Chi Minh City and international travelers. Moreover, within its administrative territory lies the picturesque resort town of Mui Ne, celebrated for its long beach ideal for relaxation and countless water activities.

A brief history of Phan Thiet and the region

Phan Thiet once formed part of the Champa Kingdom, which extended across this central zone of modern Vietnam. In 1692, it was conquered by Lord Nguyen Phuc Chu, who subsequently named it Binh Thuan Dinh. During the struggle for independence from France, Binh Thuan became a stronghold of notable resisters, including Phan Chau Trinh and Tran Quy Cap.

The region is also bound to a legend recounting that this is where Han Mac Tu, one of Vietnam's greatest romantic poets of the 20th century, dwelt while awaiting the woman of his dreams, Mong Cam.

What to do in Phan Thiet and its surroundings?

Discover Mui Ne

It is unthinkable not to head toward Mui Ne when visiting Phan Thiet. Indeed, it is mainly for this wonderful resort town that tourists venture to this region. Residents of Ho Chi Minh City also adore its beaches (though they don't quite rival Nha Trang's), as well as its main thoroughfare, lined with numerous restaurants and boutiques.

With its long white sand beach bordered by palm trees, Mui Ne ranks among Vietnam's finest places to unwind and soak up the sun. Furthermore, the temperature of its waters remains pleasant year-round.

The most sought-after stretch of Mui Ne is Bai Rang Beach, where swimming is safe. Delicious grilled fish is also served here. You're sure to have a wonderful time!

Another celebrated Mui Ne beach is Hon Rom, located near Long Son hamlet. This one is especially prized for its wild character. And like Bai Rang, it suits families well too.

Mui Ne's appeal extends beyond its beaches' beauty. It's also a hub for numerous water sports, such as kayaking and jet-skiing. It swarms with surfing, kitesurfing and sailing enthusiasts between November and March. The small resort town is indeed among Southeast Asia's most coveted destinations for these activities. Surf schools operate here to cater to those wishing to learn the discipline.

Explore Mui Ne's red sand dunes

The red sand dunes, rising roughly twenty kilometers from Mui Ne, are also an unmissable site during a trip to this region. They offer a charming spectacle of glowing red sand mountains, which blend harmoniously with the sky.

Beyond being a feast for the eyes, these dunes also permit various activities, such as sandboarding and "dune-bashing" by all-terrain motorbike or jeep. Those not attracted to thrills, meanwhile, can simply admire them and snap photos, with the sea as backdrop. They are particularly magnificent in the afternoon and at sunset.

Conquer Ta Cu Mountain

Embark on an adventure both active and spiritual by trekking or hiking Ta Cu Mountain. The natural beauty of this mountain will reveal itself as you ascend. Two celebrated pagodas (Linh Son Truong Tho and Long Doan) await you at its summit. Southeast Asia's largest reclining Buddha statue, measuring 49 meters long, lies here as well.

It's worth noting that Ta Cu Mountain's summit is also accessible by cable car, giving those less drawn to hiking an easy option.

Examine the Po Shanu Cham Towers

The Po Shanu Cham Towers, located 7 km north of Phan Thiet, rank among the region's most significant historical monuments. They were erected by the Cham people in the late 18th century. Their ancient artifacts will reveal Phan Thiet's captivating history to you. These towers feature detailed designs. You'll enjoy examining them as well.

Wander through Fairy Stream (Suoi Tien)

Approximately 18 km northeast of Phan Thiet lies Suoi Tien, a bucolic stream that dazzles many visitors. This waterway stands out for its setting within a landscape of striking contrasts. On one side rise red and white sand dunes, while on the other stretch rows of coconut palms and lush trees.

That's not all. The stream's water runs red due to the red sand lining its bed and sunlight. All these elements combined make this place among the region's most stunning.

Meet underwater creatures at Ba Island

Ba Island is a preserved natural gem, wrapped in verdant vegetation and bordered by fine sand beaches. Crystal-clear waters revealing the beauty of the seabed surround it. The island stands as one of Phan Thiet's most emblematic tourist destinations. Tourists come here to relax, have fun and immerse themselves in the pleasures of scuba diving.

Have a great time at Ghen Island

Ghen Island, with its fairly wild landscape, is another intriguing isle to discover during your journey through the region. It harbors a magnificent coral reef and is a fitting spot for fishing. You can arrange a shuttle from your hotel or rent a fisherman's boat to get there.

Appreciate Rang Beach

Rang Beach, an immaculate pearl of Phan Thiet's coastline, stretches some 15 km north of Phan Thiet's town center. Its clear waters lap a shore where picturesque coconut palms sway gracefully. Here, grilled green flying fish are sold—a dish sure to delight your palate.

Visit Ke Ga Beach and Southeast Asia's tallest lighthouse

The Ke Ga Lighthouse, designed by French engineers, is recognized as Southeast Asia's tallest lighthouse. The structure stands 20 km from Phan Thiet. Not far away spreads the eponymous beach, which draws increasingly more tourists due to its wild beauty.

Unwind far from the world at Doi Duong Beach

Doi Duong Beach, 2 km northeast of Ham Tan District, is the ideal place to relax away from crowds while remaining close to Phan Thiet's town center. However, note that it's not covered in white sand. But this is offset by the verdant poplar forest fringing it.

Savor fresh seafood at Ham Tien Market

Ham Tien Market sits about twenty minutes' drive from Phan Thiet's town center, in Mui Ne's tourist zones. By visiting it, you'll discover the region's delicious cuisine. Seafood takes center stage in this market.

Marvel at Co Thach Beach's rocks

Should you wish to extend your search for natural wonders in this region, then visit Co Thach Beach and its rocks, roughly two hours' drive northeast of Phan Thiet. This celebrated stretch of Binh Thuan's coastline is recognized as Vietnam's most colorful rocky beach.

Co Thach's rocks display different sizes and shapes. During certain parts of the year, they become covered in moss, which enhances their beauty.
