What to Do in the Surroundings of Ban Me Thuot?
Explore the Wild Environment of Yok Don National Park
Nestled in Buon Don district and sprawling across approximately 115,500 hectares, Yok Don National Park ranks among Vietnam's largest nature reserves. Its flora consists primarily of lush deciduous forests, through which the Serepok River winds its way.
The protected zone is renowned for its diverse wildlife. No fewer than 67 mammal species, 38 of which are endangered, have been recorded here. Wild elephants, tigers and leopards still roam freely, along with muntjacs and primates.
As for birdlife, the park is home to 250 bird species, including a pair of giant ibis. The population of reptiles and invertebrates comprises 46 species.
Wild animals share Yok Don National Park with 17 ethnic groups, primarily Ede and M'nong tribes. The main activity here is trekking, which can range from a few hours to several days. Trekkers have the option to stay with local families, an experience that will add richness to your adventures in this pristine environment.
Notably, Yok Don National Park is crossed by the Ho Chi Minh Trail. This path offers the opportunity to admire stilt houses built by the M'Nong people over 100 years ago.
Ride Elephants at Buon Don Village
Some 50 km from Buon Ma Thuot lies Buon Don village, a realm of elephants. Its reputation rests notably on the training of these magnificent creatures.
You'll be astonished to see numerous elephants strolling through the streets, carrying their mahouts or tourists on their backs. A journey through forests and rivers atop these gigantic mammals is an unmissable experience when visiting the village.
Another attraction of Buon Don is its elephant garden. A statue of Khusanup, the "elephant hunter king," stands here. This remarkable man, who lived for 110 years, became famous for his incredible skill in taming elephants. He trained over 400 of them during his lifetime, some of which were gifted to sovereigns.
Khusanup passed his expertise to his son Ama Kong, who passed away in 2012. In the stilt house that once belonged to him, you'll find photographs and documents relating to the capture and training of wild elephants.
Finally, visiting Buon Don offers an opportunity to taste local culinary specialties, such as com lam, sticky rice cooked in bamboo, and grilled wild chicken.
Discover Lak Lake
Spanning 6 km², with a length of 5 km and width of 2 km, Lak Lake is Vietnam's second-largest lake, after Ba Be Lake. This body of water, perched at 500 meters altitude and cradled by verdant mountains, unfolds a breathtaking tableau. It lies 56 km south of Buon Ma Thuot.
Lak Lake lends itself beautifully to boat excursions, which can lead to encounters with the M'Nong ethnic group and their beautiful wooden stilt houses established along the lake's shores. A boat ride on Lak Lake will also allow you to discover the traditional fishing techniques of this community, as well as their charming wooden boats carved from precious timber.
Should you be captivated by the enchanting setting of this place, you can stay in the former residence of Bao Dai, the last emperor of Vietnam. The building, now converted into a hotel, overlooks the lake.
Marvel at the Region's Waterfalls
Four superb waterfalls (Dray Nur, Gia Long, Trinh Nu and Dray Sap) dot the Buon Ma Thuot region. But the most impressive is arguably Dray Sap (Male Falls). Standing at 30 meters high with a length of 250 meters, its deafening waters conceal an immense grotto adorned with stalactites and stalagmites.
Dray Nur Falls (Female Falls), less than an hour's drive from the city, is also well worth the visit.
Meet the Region's Ethnic Minorities
The Buon Ma Thuot region is a stronghold of numerous ethnic minorities who preserve ancestral traditions and customs. Originally inhabited by the Ê Đê people, Buon Ma Thuot today is home to over 47 different ethnic groups, among the most well-known being the Ê Đê, M'Nong, Ba Na, Gia Rai, and Xo Dang. Should fortune smile upon you, you may witness these communities perform traditional dances or music, particularly during ceremonies, during your visit.
Visit a Coffee Plantation
The history of Vietnam's coffee industry dates back to French colonization, when this region received its first coffee plantations in the early 19th century. Today, the country ranks as the world's leading robusta coffee producer. More than 3 million people work in this sector.
Buon Ma Thuot is considered Vietnam's coffee capital. A visit to a coffee farm should absolutely be included in your itinerary if you haven't already experienced one. Local guides will reveal to you the techniques of harvesting and preparing coffee. Afterward, they'll invite you to taste a cup and appreciate its subtle aromas.
If you plan to visit the region in March, you'll also have the opportunity to attend the Coffee Festival, during which various events (festival, competitions, exhibitions…) related to coffee are organized.
