Con Son village
Con Son island, within the Con Dao archipelago, blends penitentiary heritage, deserted beaches and one of Vietnam's best-preserved marine national parks.
Con Son, the largest and only inhabited island of the Con Dao archipelago, embodies Vietnam's preserved natural beauty and rich historical heritage. Renowned for its pristine landscapes and the warm welcome of its inhabitants, Con Son offers a rare harmony between serenity and poignant historical legacy. Unlike more touristic destinations such as Phu Quoc or Nha Trang, the island remains relatively discreet, preserving an isolated charm that makes it the ideal setting for an unforgettable escape.
History
Con Son, the main island of the Con Dao archipelago, has a captivating past marked by centuries of foreign influences and historical events. Mentioned as early as the 13th century. In 1867, during French colonization, Con Son became infamous for its prison, where French colonizers and later South Vietnamese forces imprisoned political opponents. During the Vietnam War, "tiger cages" were added, symbolizing the inhumane detention conditions that prevailed there until the prison's closure in 1975.
Today
Currently, Con Son preserves the memory of this dark era. The prison has been transformed into a museum, where visitors can discover the infamous tiger cages and understand the events that marked the island's history. Sites like Hang Duong cemetery and several former camps also bear witness to this period. Allow yourself to be moved by Con Son's poignant history while exploring its natural and preserved landscapes.
