Sa Dec

·

Between floating gardens, century-old brick kilns and memories of Marguerite Duras, Sa Dec unveils the softest facet of the Mekong Delta.

Often presented as the capital of Dong Thap province, Sa Dec is in reality a peaceful hamlet with authentic charm. Its small bridges, winding streams and beautifully preserved colonial houses have earned it the nickname of the "Oriental Venice" of the Mekong Delta. This enchanting setting inspired writer Marguerite Duras, who drew the material for her novel L'Amant from her time here.

The History of Sa Dec

Once the capital of Dong Khau Dao, Sa Dec was long one of the most influential cities in the Delta. During the French colonial period, it welcomed the family of Marguerite Duras, whose mother directed the French girls' school. Between 1928 and 1932, the writer lived a love story here with a young man of Chinese descent, inspiring her novel L'Amant, now inseparable from the city.

The city was also marked by political and military episodes: in 1951, the Southern governor was assassinated in a Viêt Minh attack, and an American base was established there during the Vietnam War.

Sa Dec Today

A medium-sized city of approximately 100,000 inhabitants, Sa Dec has maintained a serene atmosphere. It remains an active agricultural and port center, renowned for its markets, its craftsmanship, but above all for its horticulture. As the Têt approach, its flower gardens are adorned with vibrant colors, making the city a major center of floral production in Vietnam, earning it the nickname of the "Flower City of the Mekong."
