Vung Tau
Once known as Cap Saint-Jacques, just 2 hours from Saigon, Vung Tau captivates with its beaches, a towering Christ statue, and shrimp bánh khọt. Our guide for the perfect weekend escape.
Vung Tau is the go-to destination for residents of Ho Chi Minh City, ideal for a quick coastal getaway. Just two hours' drive away, this beach resort offers a chance to breathe in the sea air, unwind, and savor delicious seafood. While its beaches may not rival those of Con Dao, Vung Tau charms visitors with its welcoming atmosphere and accessibility, making it the perfect spot for a relaxing weekend.
A Fascinating History
Formerly known as Cap Saint-Jacques, Vung Tau boasts a history stretching back to the 14th and 15th centuries, when it served as a waypoint for European merchants. The city was officially founded in 1822 under the Nguyễn dynasty, after being secured against Malay pirates. During the colonial era, it became a strategic port and a favored beach resort for the French. It was under their occupation that the White Villa was built in 1898 and the city's lighthouse came into being in 1911. During the Vietnam War, Vung Tau served as a military base for Australian and American forces and welcomed many refugees following the fall of Saigon in 1975.
Vung Tau Today
After the war, the city became the capital of a special administrative zone in 1979, then the capital of Bà Rịa-Vũng Tàu province in 1991. This rapid development left its mark, such as the destruction of the Christian cemetery in 1986. Today, Vung Tau is a thriving economic and tourist hub, attracting visitors and investors alike while preserving remnants of its colonial and military past.
