Discover everything you need to know to conquer the Cloud Pass.
What is Hai Van Pass?
Translated as "Cloud Pass," Hai Van Pass is a mythical road in central Vietnam. Rising to nearly 500 meters above sea level and stretching for 21 kilometers, the Cloud Pass crosses a spur of the Truong Son mountain range. It connects Thua Thien Hue province and the city of Danang.
For a bit of history, the pass once served as a geopolitical boundary between the Champa and Dai Viet kingdoms. Today, the Cloud Pass serves as a natural border between Thua Thien Hue province and the city of Danang.
Until the Hai Van Tunnel opened in 2005, the Cloud Pass was the only road connecting north and south in the region. But since the tunnel's inauguration (the longest in Southeast Asia), the road has regained some of its tranquility and sees far less traffic.
Today, it has become a playground for motorcyclists seeking thrills and an ideal destination for visitors in search of picturesque landscapes. Many consider it one of the most beautiful roads in the world.
What to See on a Road Trip Over the Cloud Pass?
With its clouds clinging to the mountains, views of the ocean, and impressive hairpin turns, the road itself is worth the detour. From lush mountains to breathtaking vistas, you'll feast your eyes throughout the journey!
Viewpoints
The Cloud Pass offers spectacular views of the region, with the South China Sea on one side and mountains on the other. Each turn reveals a new landscape. At the summit, weather permitting, you can see Danang city, Tien Sa port, part of the Son Tra peninsula, and the sublime Lang Co beach.
Note that the main viewpoint is located at the French bunkers at the summit of the pass.
Hai Van Quan Gate and Historical Remnants
Beyond its breathtaking scenery, the Cloud Pass is also a site rich in history. Notably, you'll find an imposing brick gate with fortress-like features, called Hai Van Quan. It was constructed during the Tran dynasty by Emperor Minh Mang in the 19th century and restored under the Nguyen dynasty. On one side of the gate, you can see the inscription "The most magnificent border gate under the heavens of this world.
