Whale Island
Whale Island
A small island in Van Phong Bay, accessible from Nha Trang, Whale Island (Hon Ong) is home to a unique beachfront resort complex.
Whale Island, known locally as Hon Ong, is a small tropical island located in Van Phong Bay, in Khanh Hoa province, in south-central Vietnam. Bordered by a clear sandy beach and surrounded by calm waters, it welcomes a small isolated resort complex that serves as its sole accommodation infrastructure. Its popularity remains discreet, making it a sought-after stop for travelers in search of peace and quiet between Nha Trang and Quy Nhon Bay.
Why visit Whale Island?
The main appeal of Hon Ong lies in its isolation. No roads, no villages, no traffic: the island consists of a main cove, its clear sand, tropical vegetation, and the resort complex that occupies a portion of it. Van Phong Bay, where it is located, is one of the largest and most sheltered bays along Vietnam's coastline, with generally calm seas and decent underwater visibility.
Whale Island is particularly well suited for travelers seeking a complete break after a north-south loop through Vietnam, or before continuing on to the highlands. It is not a day-trip destination: it is a stop for a stay, typically two to four nights, where you alternate between swimming, snorkeling, and relaxation.
What to see and do
The beach and lagoon
The main beach stretches for several hundred meters facing a shallow lagoon. The water is clear and swimming is possible for much of the year. At low tide, sandbars and small coral reefs emerge offshore.
Snorkeling and diving
The waters near the island are home to coral and diverse marine life: clownfish, parrotfish, sea urchins, and occasionally rays. The resort complex lends masks and snorkels, and organizes boat excursions to other reefs in Van Phong Bay. Several bottle-diving sites are also accessible, with supervision from the island.
Trails and viewpoints
Hon Ong is small but features wooded terrain. A trail leads to a viewpoint over the bay in approximately one hour's walk. The hike is best done early in the morning to avoid the heat.
Kayaking and windsurfing
Kayaks and windsurfing boards are available to guests. They allow you to paddle along the island's coast and explore small coves inaccessible on foot.
When to visit
The best time to stay on Whale Island extends from February to September, when the sea is calm and sunshine is regular. The rainy season, from October to December, brings rough seas and sometimes suspended crossings: it is best to avoid this period. The months of March to May offer the most stable conditions, with clear water ideal for snorkeling.
How to get there
Access is from the village of Dam Mon, on the Hon Gom peninsula, approximately 60 km north of Nha Trang. From Nha Trang, allow two to three hours by private car or hotel-organized transfer, followed by a boat crossing of about thirty minutes. Transfers are generally coordinated by the resort complex, with fixed departure times during the day. The nearest international airport is Cam Ranh, which serves Nha Trang from Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi.

What to combine in the region
Whale Island fits well into an itinerary between central and southern Vietnam. Before or after your stay, you can extend your nature experience with other destinations in the country:
- Cát Bà, another major island in the north, for its national park and biosphere reserve.
- The Cai Rang floating market, in the Mekong Delta, for a very different river atmosphere.
- Ba Den Mountain, near Tay Ninh, accessible from Ho Chi Minh City for a day excursion.
- The botanical garden and zoo of Ho Chi Minh City, an urban stop at the beginning or end of your trip.
